Aldane Leonard Greaves, affectionately known as Brother and Elder Al Greaves was born December 2, 1930 in the parish of Westmoreland, Jamaica, W.I. Aldane was the son of the late Henry and Edna (nee Murdoch-Petgrave). He grew up in St. James Parish. Aldane married his lifelong sweetheart, Lena “Dots” Elsada Greaves (nee Simmonds) on August 30, 1960. They had 4 children – Cedric, Earle, Tftka (David) and Andrea. In 1965 they emigrated to England where Al worked as a clerk and enjoyed playing in a cricket league. A strong swimmer, he rescued two drowning young ladies at a British seashore where the family was vacationing, losing his wallet and all his pocket’s contents. In 1969 the Greaves family emigrated once again, this time to America and settled in Baltimore where the family flourished amongst friends and family. Al continued his studies, earning his MBA and worked in various agencies, including the DC Public Service Commission, from which he retired in the late 80’s. The family moved to Florida in the late 80’s and finally resettled in Charlotte County in the small town of Charlotte Court House, neighboring Farmville, Virginia in 2004. Throughout his life Al was an activist for Christ and looked forward to the Blessed Hope of salvation and eternal life. He was very active in literature evangelism, giving Bible studies, serving as deacon and elder in several Seventh-day Adventist Churches in Jamaica, England and North America, including Towson (now Pikesville), Sharon, Liberty Heights in Baltimore, MD; Mars Hill and Deltona Florida; as well as Farmville, Virginia. He enjoyed reading and keeping up with current world events, including a subscription to the Jamaican Gleaner. He was an avid gardener and he loved to sing in groups, quartets and especially duets with Dots. He and his Dots were seldom apart. In those rare times he would often sigh, “ahh, I miss Dots!” In December Al suffered seizures which caused his health to decline. Still, they were together when he breathed his last at 7:40 a.m. Sunday, April 24, 2022. His wisdom will forever be missed but we know we will see him again on that “Great Gettin’ Up Morning” when the Savior calls for him. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.”– Psalm 116:15
