Betty Jean (Carter) Sumpter, age 77, of Crewe, Virginia by way of Stockbridge, Georgia went to be with the Lord on 31 July 2025. She is proceeded in death by her parents James (Boo) L. Carter and Judy A. (Miller) Carter.
Betty was born on 3 October 1947 in Rice, Virginia. She graduated from Robert R. Morton High School in Prince Edward County in 1966. She obtained her Bachelors Degree in Psychology from St. Leo’s College and Master’s in Strategic Studies from the Army War College. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
Betty retired after 25+ years of government Civil Service to the United States Army as the Comptroller/Management Analyst Officer.
She leaves to mourn her daughter Michelle (Jae) Bullock and son Jay (Tyawanna) Sumpter; sister and brother, Linda (Tom) S. Carter and Larry (Sherri) Carter; grandchildren Sachet Barnett, Kaliyah Perry (deceased) and Jayceon (Bootny) Sumpter; great grandchildren Jevaughn Barnett and Giovanni Dorsey; aunt Roxie Taylor; uncle Robert Jackson, Sr.; a very special niece Tamia Young and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Betty loved traveling across the world, was an avid reader, cooked and baked. She cherished her family and close friends and was always the first person there whenever there was a need.
