Clifton Eugene Smith was born on December 25, 1940 to the late Madelean Wiley in Prince Edward County, Virginia. He departed this life and was called From labor and received his reward on the early morning of February 3, 2021 peacefully in his home of Rice, Virginia.Eugene, better known as Gene, accepted Christ at an early age and when returning to Virginia from Philadelphia, PA. he became a member of High Rock Baptist Church until his health began to fail. Gene attended Prince Edward County public school where he received his education but soon had to leave school to support his family. He would lovingly joke by saying “his teacher loved him so much she didn’t want him to leave her class”. On July 11, 1961 Eugene married the woman of his dreams, the late Dora C. Smith in Rice, VA.. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Philadelphia. PA where Eugene had gainful employment as a Truck Driver for a beverage company during the day and a janitor at night to support his wife and family. From the union came two daughters, Madlean Carol Smith (who preceded him in death) and Sophie Eugenia Smith-Lomax. After raising his family, Eugene and his wife retired and returned to Rice, Virginia. He returned to the work force and began employment with Buffalo Shook of Farmville, VA until the loss of his wife. Eugene leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Sophie Smith-Lomax (John), two grandchildren, Keith E. Smith and Jessica A. Robinson, two great grandchildren, Joshua M. Robinson and Madilyn S. Smith, one aunt Lovelean Madison of Maryland, two sister-in-laws Berlean Smith and Frances Spencer (Lacy) of Rice, VA, a host of nieces and nephews whose lives he lovingly touched, three of which he influenced their lives greatly and a sea of cousins who he enjoyed spending summer days with. He also leaves to cherish his memory his best friends Cliff Forrest and nephew Leon Smith, who was sure to bring tears to his eyes from laughter
