Lucy Gordon Obituary

Lucy Lelia Hill Gordon the daughter of the late Curtis and Lovonia Hill, the sixth of nine children was born on December 24, 1937 in Burkeville, VA. Early Sunday morning, January 23, 2022 Lucy peacefully transitioned from this earthly home to be with the Lord.

Lucy was baptized at an early age and joined Gravel Hill Baptist Church. She was an active member of the Usher Board, Pastor’s Aide Society, Hospitality Committee and faithfully supported the Gravel Hill Baptist Church Scholarship Fund with her well-loved sweet potato pies.

On June 30, 1956, she married the love of her life, George Gordon. During this union they were blessed with two children, LaContiss (Bernae) and Gerald (Jerry). Lucy attended schools in Nottoway County, graduating from Luther H. Foster High School in 1956. Desiring to have a trade, she attended Smith Massey Business School in Richmond, VA and subsequently gained employment as the Clerical Secretary at the Southside Skill Center in Crewe, VA where she worked for many years. She later worked for the Amelia County Public School System as a substitute teacher and worked part-time as a cashier at Star Value in Crewe, VA, where everyone knew her and would seek to get in her line as she loved to talk and could hold a conversation with anyone she encountered. Lucy will always be remembered for her heartfelt laugh and exceptional dress, regardless of how casual the occasion, she would be dressed up. She loved her family, specifically remembering in church she would be joyfully holding and playing with her great-great nephew.

Lucy leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Bernae Branch (Darrell), Jacksonville, FLA.; her son, Gerald Gordon (Jackie), Fayetteville, GA.; The Grands: Shanquanna Gordon, Dr. Ajaryl Bell (Marc, Sr.), Darrell Branch, Shameek Branch, Shakeem Branch, Najee Branch and Shameela Branch; Great-grands: Ky’Ari, Addison, Marc, jr., and Aspen and Godson, Brian Hobbs; brother, Calvin Hill (Ina) and sister, Edith Smith (Mearl); many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lucy was especially fond of her nephew , Jody Hill who spent time with her and even more would take her out to family events. Her special group of life -long friends who were supportive and visited her often: Mary Johnson, Daisy Foster, Hallie VanRomondt, Barbara Faulk, Betty Wilkerson, Martha Jackson, Shirley Baptist, and Ella Keeton.
