Mattie Marie Day Nunnally was born on October 9, 1954 to the late Deacon William Day Sr. and Mattie Lee Day, originally living in Jennings Ordinary before moving to Burkeville, VA. She and her twin sister Mabel were the second and third of nine children. She was lovingly known to most family members as ”Marie”.
She accepted Christ at an early age at Gravel Hill Baptist Church in Jetersville, VA. She was active in church and Sunday school. She was educated in Nottoway County Public Schools. She was a good student and enjoyed playing on the school’s basketball team. In 1974, she married Melvin Nunnally and two daughters were born to the union. She became a member of High Rock Baptist Church where she later became a member of the inspirational choir. Mattie was employed by the two shoe factories in town - Craddock Terry and Virginia Shoe Company for more than 20 years until they both eventually closed. Then she went on to work in the shoe department at Walmart in Farmville from August 1998 until September 2021. She became well known at Walmart for her kind greetings and positive interactions with all who came in contact with her there.
She was preceded in death by her sister Sandra and her brother Joseph. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 47 years Melvin, daughters Katrita (James) and LaKara (significant other Frank), two grandchildren: Jayla and Kayden, five sisters: Jeanette, Mabel, Daisy, Judith (Donald), and Joyce, one brother William Jr. (Deborah), five sisters-in-law, five brothers-in-law, one uncle Alvin Lee, two aunts: Queen and Iona and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends, including special friends: Silvia Gray, Marilyn Morton, Debra Marsh, and Linda Miles.
