Willie "WJ" Hartwill entered into the gates of Heaven on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. Willie was born on January 17, 1946 in Prince Edward County to the late Willie Hartwill Sr and the late Pearl Walker Hartwill. He accepted Christ at an early age and faithfully served Him his entire life. WJ attended school in Cumberland County. He worked as a logger early in life and went on to retire from Buckingham County Correctional Facility as an officer.
Willie was affectionately called WJ by family and friends. He was also known as Chillie-Willie at the Piney Grove Hunt Club. Willie loved the Lord, he loved his family and helping people. Early in the morning, in the middle of the day and late in the evening, WJ would study the word and pray. His legacy is his well-worn Bible. WJ is known for his sweet potato pies and cooking breakfast for the family. He loved fishing, hunting and football. His favorite team was the Dallas Cowboys. WJ served as the chairman of the Deacon Board at Mount Mariah Baptist Church for many years, until he transferred his membership to New Life Assembly of God. He was a faithful Sunday School Teacher at New Life.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 48 years: Yvonne Hartwill of Farmville, VA, 3 daughters: Donzella Hartwill, Washington DC, Rachael Hartwill-Anderson (Theodore) Chesterfield VA, and Rolounda Hartwill-Hooker (Brandon), Rice, VA, 1 son, Willie Hartwill III, Farmville, VA and 1 brother, Reverend Amos Hartwill (Carrie), Chesterfield, VA, 9 grandchildren; Sedet, Ambrohsia, Michael, Grayson, Ayden, Eryn, Jacob, Willie IV, and Noemi, a host of sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
